Something about the department

The first part of the department's title (Market operations & North America) refers to the work the team does to make Lloyd’s a more attractive place to do business. This means making sure that business can be conducted efficiently, at a reasonable cost and with excellent service. This team also manages the operations of our North American offices.

Market placements – why bother? Because it’s smart practice

As part of the Lloyd’s Graduate Scheme, we all have the opportunity to spend six months working for one of the companies that operate in the Lloyd’s market. This could be for a broker or a managing agent.

A few weeks into the graduate scheme, I can remember dismissing the idea out of hand: I was happy where I was and had started building up some good relationships within Lloyd’s. Why move on?

So, even though I’d be leaving Market Operations, moving on to a Lloyd’s-based placement would at least mean working in the same building, with the same people, keeping up with the friends I’d made, and still getting full blown roast dinners every lunchtime.

But now I’m approaching the end of my time with Market Operations, the value of a market-based placement with a broker or managing agent has become more obvious.

As I’ve said before, working for Lloyd’s (particularly in Market Operations) means working closely with the syndicates and managing agents that make up the Lloyd’s market.

It will be interesting to see things from ‘the other side of the fence’.

Lloyd’s puts in a lot of effort to keep up with the needs and opinions of the market’s participants. I should too. I might be one, one day…but then again, I am!
