Something about the department

The first part of the department's title (Market operations & North America) refers to the work the team does to make Lloyd’s a more attractive place to do business. This means making sure that business can be conducted efficiently, at a reasonable cost and with excellent service. This team also manages the operations of our North American offices.

A year in review…

Posted on Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

It seems very strange that in a couple of weeks, I will have been working at Lloyd’s for over a year and we will also be joined by a new intake of graduates.
Time really has gone very quickly, my placement in Market Operations seems like yesterday, despite the fact that I moved to my market [...]

A different option for graduate careers

Posted on Thursday, June 18th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

I’m often asked how (or perhaps why) I chose to work in insurance—usually by people from outside the industry, not surprisingly.
Knowledge of the business of insurance in this country isn’t good. For most people, insurance means house, car or travel insurance—hardly the most exciting features of life.
As a result people could mistakenly imagine a career working [...]

Change of scene

Posted on Friday, April 24th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

We’ve all recently finished our first placement on the Lloyd’s Grad Scheme, and I’ve now moved on to work in the Lloyd’s market.
The ‘market’ is made up of a wide variety of organisations, but principally this refers to being either an underwriter (those who accept and carry the risks) or a broker (represents clients, bringing [...]

As part of the Lloyd’s Graduate Scheme, we all have the opportunity to spend six months working for one of the companies that operate in the Lloyd’s market. This could be for a broker or a managing agent.
A few weeks into the graduate scheme, I can remember dismissing the idea out of hand: I was [...]

Settled in

Posted on Thursday, February 12th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

I’ve been working here now for a couple of months and really feel like I’ve settled in.  It really didn’t take long – and that’s a good reflection on the people that work here.
It definitely takes a little while to get your head around the whole Lloyd’s concept and how the place works, but I [...]

Getting on with it

Posted on Wednesday, December 03rd, 2008 at 4:38 pm

After a really enjoyable induction week we headed off to join our respective teams. Again, there was an element of apprehension as we were now going to be split up. I was going to join the Market Operations and North America directorate, but didn’t know a lot more than that!
During the induction week I’d met [...]

First impressions (induction week)

Posted on Friday, November 14th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Walking to Lloyd’s for my first day of ‘real work’ was a slightly surreal experience after a gap year of climbing expeditions, sailing and playing cricket.
I’d had a pretty high level of contact from Lloyd’s before starting, so I wasn’t worried as we knew exactly what to expect – but I suppose there was still [...]
