Moving on

Posted on Friday, March 19th, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I can’t believe how quickly this has come around, but 6 months are up, and it’s time to move on down the line. It’s amazing how quickly you get comfortable in a team, and it will be a bit of an adjustment to move on and start again!
For me, the next placement is Claims (where [...]

What’s that coming over the hill…

Posted on Monday, February 08th, 2010 at 10:24 am

The New Year may have been seen in with many sore heads and fuzzy memories, but the recent earthquake in Haiti reminds us of the dangerous world we live in. The earthquake measured a huge 7.0 Mw, a magnitude not experienced in Haiti in over a century. And this is part and parcel of the [...]

Election gossip at Lloyd’s

Posted on Thursday, February 04th, 2010 at 9:14 am

My current placement in the government policy and affairs team involves monitoring and responding to legislative developments.  Much of this work focuses on the European Union  and of course the infamous Solvency II directive – tip: this is a huge issue for Lloyd’s so if you are interested in applying make sure you know what [...]

Something for Everyone

Posted on Tuesday, February 02nd, 2010 at 3:18 pm

The other week, I attended a lunchtime lecture by Pen Hadow, a well known arctic explorer. It was really enjoyable to have the opportunity to engage the ‘biological’ part of my brain whilst at work.
Catlin, a managing agent at Lloyd’s, had commissioned an expedition, which Pen led, to perform a transect across the Arctic, taking [...]

Climate Change is a hoax!?

Posted on Friday, December 11th, 2009 at 3:44 pm

Even though sceptics are nipping at the heels of allegedly number fiddling scientists, the issue of climate change is still one of the largest issues facing mankind.
The current United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen has really brought the issue of climate change into the limelight. With nations attempting to reach agreements on how climate [...]

Day to day life of a graduate…

Posted on Tuesday, December 08th, 2009 at 10:21 am

I’ve now been with the Claims Team for just over two months, and am not even the newest person on my team (although admittedly the other new claims recruits have a whole plethora of experience compared to my 8 weeks…)
So, now that I know my way to the coffee shop, have a name plate on [...]

A quick guide to insurance at Lloyd’s

Posted on Sunday, November 15th, 2009 at 9:26 am

It’s now November, and already HR are talking about the new graduates for September 2010.   If you are looking at this site, you have probably at least given some thought to the insurance industry.  However, I would not want anyone to be put off from applying as they really do not know how insurance works.
Ok, [...]

Change of scene

Posted on Friday, April 24th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

We’ve all recently finished our first placement on the Lloyd’s Grad Scheme, and I’ve now moved on to work in the Lloyd’s market.
The ‘market’ is made up of a wide variety of organisations, but principally this refers to being either an underwriter (those who accept and carry the risks) or a broker (represents clients, bringing [...]

Weird insurance

Posted on Monday, March 16th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

One of the pieces of news that circulated in the newspapers last week was that coffee taster Gennaro Pelliccia, who samples products for Costa Coffee, has had his tongue insured for £10m with Lloyd’s.
The Lloyd’s market has a particular interest in how Costa’s coffee tastes as the Lloyd’s cafeteria serves Costa Coffee.  And guest what, [...]

Crash course in risk management…

Posted on Tuesday, December 09th, 2008 at 10:49 am

Time to meet the team—the people who I’ll be spending the majority of my day with for the next six months.

When I was first taken to my area I was given a quick once over of the surroundings: an inviting window-facing desk; an approachable looking team…things were looking promising.

I was introduced to everyone in the [...]
