You wouldn’t steal a mobile phone…

Posted on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 at 2:56 pm

If you have been to the cinema recently, you will have undoubtedly seen the flashing images accompanied by ‘rocking’ dance music aimed at teenagers in the anti-piracy adverts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmZm8vNHBSU
‘You wouldn’t steal a car…
You wouldn’t steal a handbag…
You wouldn’t steal a mobile phone…
You wouldn’t steal a movie…
Film piracy is a crime’
This is true. No doubt about it. [...]

A quick guide to insurance at Lloyd’s

Posted on Sunday, November 15th, 2009 at 9:26 am

It’s now November, and already HR are talking about the new graduates for September 2010.   If you are looking at this site, you have probably at least given some thought to the insurance industry.  However, I would not want anyone to be put off from applying as they really do not know how insurance works.
Ok, [...]

Second placement – 6 months in the market!

Posted on Tuesday, June 09th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

I can’t believe it’s already been two months since I started my second placement at a Lloyd’s syndicate. It’s a busy world out here.
The first part of my placement has been with a team of aviation underwriters. Like most people I really didn’t know much about aviation insurance before I joined—but it has proved to [...]

It has now been eight months since I started at Lloyd’s, and having had a fantastic time working for the International Regulatory Affairs team, I am about to embark on my next placement within Lloyd’s where I’ll be joining International Markets.

Weird insurance

Posted on Monday, March 16th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

One of the pieces of news that circulated in the newspapers last week was that coffee taster Gennaro Pelliccia, who samples products for Costa Coffee, has had his tongue insured for £10m with Lloyd’s.
The Lloyd’s market has a particular interest in how Costa’s coffee tastes as the Lloyd’s cafeteria serves Costa Coffee.  And guest what, [...]

Market placements – why bother? Because it’s smart practice

Posted on Tuesday, March 03rd, 2009 at 4:27 pm

As part of the Lloyd’s Graduate Scheme, we all have the opportunity to spend six months working for one of the companies that operate in the Lloyd’s market. This could be for a broker or a managing agent.
A few weeks into the graduate scheme, I can remember dismissing the idea out of hand: I was [...]

This little graduate went to market

Posted on Friday, February 20th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

A few weeks ago, I spent two days with a broker and one day with an underwriter in the box at Lloyd’s.
Every day (usually many times a day), I walk across the underwriting floor (see it in the interactive tour on the Lloyd’s graduate site) to go downstairs to the canteen or the cafeteria.
I rarely think [...]
